Things that you need to know before traveling to Cuba

How to pack for your trip to Cuba
Imagine yourself walking the streets of old Havana, mojito in one hand and camera on the other or immersing yourself in the Havana harbors while enjoying a dance on the streets to the rhythms of the carnivals. That’s what you should expect while visiting the Cuban capital during the summer month of July.
In Cuba, you will have unique experiences that would lead you to understand why the pearl of the Caribbean is such a desired destination by 45% of Europeans and 79% of Canadians. Planning to make it your next destination? Pack carefully and remember that you need to make the most out of your tropical trip.
Need to know paperwork basics
  1. Check to see that your passport is current and valid. A U.S passport is required to travel to Cuba from the United States if you are a citizen. The passport should be valid for at least six months from the time of your entry into the country, and two pages are needed for entry stamp. A visa is required to visit Cuba. There are no mandatory vaccines; however, you will be asked if you have been in Africa or Brazil in the last two months. Make sure to leave an emergency contact with your tour guide leader. For your peace of mind, please write down the U.S. Embassy contact information and enrolled in STEP (Smart Traveler Enrollment Program), a free service to allow U.S. citizens and nationals traveling and living abroad to enroll their trip with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate. Information can be found here: https://step.state.gov
  2. Pack your passport and a paper copy of your passport. Once in Cuba, you can leave your real passport in your room in the safe box but remember that you’ll need it to exchange money. No U.S. issued credit card will work in Cuba so bring enough cash (about $100 per day).
  3. What to wear: Cuba is hot year-round except for the winter months that it gets a bit chilly at night and early mornings. So, pack shorts, t-shirts, lite blouses skirts, a fun cocktail dress for night outings and comfortable shoes because there will be plenty of walking around.
  4. Necessary Accessories: Sun-screen if you are sensitive to the sun or want to prevent sunburn. Don’t forget your phone, computer, camera, etc., chargers; you want to make sure you don’t run out of juice before taking that vital selfie, or that sunset shot at the Malecón and document your trip to the island in your next blog which I will be sharing with the world ;-). Cuba uses the same electric system as the United States although, you may want to bring a three-prong converter in case your hair dryer or other electronic device needs it. Bring your shampoo, hair conditioner, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrush, comb, hairbrush, etc., and some extras to give away as gifts for kids around the block. Even though many people can afford to buy toiletries in Cuba, others don’t have the access to convertible pesos to purchase them at the store. Do not drink tap water. It’s highly recommended to buy water bottles. You may bring your reusable water bottle for refills; it is hot in Cuba and hydration is a must.
  5. Don’t forget your meds: we want you to feel good at all times so you can enjoy Cuba worry free and that means that you can’t forget to bring any medications you might be taking such as insulin, inhaler or any diabetes treatment you may need. Last but not least, pack light. When going for a short trip to Cuba is best to have just a carry on for easy boarding and getting through the airport as quick as possible. Also, it’s better when moving around Cuba if you don’t have a lot of luggage.
