No English but I'll Drive You

The communication barrier...

Walking around in Cuba is like being back in the fifties with all these classic American cars, and you can't help it but take a ride with one of them around the city. All the cars are usually lined up around the Parque Central ready for the next passenger or a photo opportunity. There are a group of classic cars that are more expensive than others, especially the convertible ones. The drivers are passionate about their vehicles and treat them as their most valuable possession. However, it's very unusual to find one with its original parts because there is no way to get them into Cuba. There are people in Cuba who have their own private mechanic shops where they make the parts and keep them running.

A conversation with a taxi driver can be tricky since most of them do not speak English, but they will drive you wherever you'd like to go and sometimes break down along the way. But no worries, because they are ready to fix it up in the middle of the road or someone will stop to assist the taxi driver in getting his old car going again. I have been in those situations a few times, and you can't get mad or complain about it... You just have to relax and go with the flow of things in Cuba. Even though there are new taxis in Cuba, I have seen a few of them broken down too, but there is nothing like riding in an old classic.

ASTA Global Convention

It was a year ago today that we attended for the first time the American Society of Travel Advisors Global Convention, and it was so accelerating to be there. Getting to know more about the industry, meeting new people and expanding my horizons was a great journey to embark on. This week I will be heading to Florida for the convention again but this time is different because I am a recipient of a scholarship: ASTA Operational Excellence Program which will take place during the conference. I will be away for a few days but available via email or text messages and will be back full of fresh new ideas and partnerships to take you to your desired destination.
