It can be complicated but it's also fun
Arriving at the Airport There are so many ways to move around Cuba. Of course, everyone wants to ride in one of these classics, but they can be expensive. When people arrive at the Havana airport, there will be a multitude of drivers asking you to take a ride in their taxi to your destination. There is the government ran taxi services called "Cuba Taxi." They are bright yellow and have checkers around the side of the cars. They are comfortable, with air conditioning and depending on where you are going, the taxi driver can charge you from $50 - $100 CUC to get you there. There are the other not so good looking or comfortable "Cuba Taxi" cars which are old Ladas and are painted in a dark yellow and black. They are less expensive, and you will feel the smell of oil in the cars. The private vehicles can be costly too, but you can negotiate prices with them. They are all kind of colors, sizes, models and overall, very old. But trust me, they are still running. All privately owned cars, have to have a special permit to be at the airport and pick up tourists. Sometimes even if the driver has everything in order, the police would stop them and ask for documentation right in front of the tourists. No need to worry about losing your ride, the checkups are routine, and they do it all the time, and in case of that happening, there are plenty of more taxis available around the airport.
What kind of Taxi?
Moving around the city is another story. Once you decide where you are going, you can flag down a taxi on the street and ask them how much to take you to a specific location. You can also take a bicitaxi if it's not too far where you are going. They can charge you $5 to $10 CUC to take you depending on how far they have to drive you. Another fun way to move around, especially in Old Havana is taking a coche(Horse and buggy). They hang out in front of the port or around the Ambos Mundos Hotel because it's a flat area and full of tourists. They have different prices to give you a tour around Old Havana, but if you just want a ride to your next stop because you are tired of walking, this is a quick and cheap way to get you there. Usually, $3 to $5 CUC is how much they will charge you.
Yes, you can take the public bus!
Walking around in Old Havana can be exhausting and that's the best way to see the city and enjoy its museums, bars, restaurants, statutes and more. Once you are done sightseeing, head over to Parque Central and you'll find plenty of all sort of transportation available to take you anywhere. And if you feel a bit more adventurous, you can ride the public bus just for a few cents.
