I love to dance, and Tango is one of Argentina's most fascinating dance styles. Besides being a wealthy country with many different styles of dancing and music, Tango is my favorite. But Argentina is also a diverse city with much to explore. If you are ready to tango and more, keep reading some inspiring ideas from my college, Ignacio Maza, below.
Buenos Aires is the most European of all South American cities. A sprawling metropolis of over 15 million inhabitants, the city is sophisticated, bustling, and cosmopolitan. Buenos Aires is a city of neighborhoods, each with its distinct character. A few recommendations, including dining venues:
El Centro This stately and historic district is where you will find the old Cabildo, the 18th-century town hall, La Casa Rosada (Argentina's Presidential Palace), and the Plaza de Mayo, Argentina's most famous square, where citizens gather to celebrate, protest, and come together to mark significant milestones. Take advantage of the beautiful congress building (modeled after the U.S. Capitol) and the Metropolitan Cathedral, where you'll find the mausoleum of General Jose de San Martin, Argentina's most revered hero who led the country to independence from Spain in 1816. Nearby is the Obelisk and Avenida 9 de Julio, the broadest avenue in the Western Hemisphere. A few other recommendations:
This neighborhood is one of the city's oldest, with narrow cobblestone streets, colonial-style homes, bustling squares, and many one-of-a-kind stores, bars, and restaurants. Highlights:
Buenos Aires' most elegant neighborhood is home to Argentina's elite and some of the best shops and restaurants in the city. Visit the namesake cemetery (one of Buenos Aires' top attractions) burial place of the country's wealthy and mighty, including Eva Peron. Highlights:
Buenos Aires' original port, blue-collar and raffish, is the birthplace of Tango and many Argentinian traditions. Visit El Caminito, the area's most famous street, and its colorfully painted houses, street art, and bustling atmosphere.
Palermo
This neighborhood is home to the city's best and most prominent parks and several subdivisions: Palermo Viejo, Palermo Soho, and Palermo Hollywood. The area is known for its trendy boutiques, vibrant bars and nightclubs, and wide range of restaurants. Don't miss:
For repeat clients, or those who are looking for new ideas in/around B.A.
Restaurants Buenos Aires has hundreds of excellent restaurants. Three personal favorites, all in the Recoleta neighborhood. Advance reservations a must:
