On December 14, 1982, the 6th Meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage was in session in Paris at the seat of the UNESCO. On that day it was unanimously agreed to grant to Old Havana's Historical Center and its fortification system the condition of a World Heritage Site. A plaque placed at El TEmplete (The Small Temple), where the original town of St. Christopher was founded, bears witness to this appointment of the city's oldest quarter, characterized by its notable historical, geographic and cultural values. Almost thirty years after the event, Old Havana boasts a renewed image thanks to efforts to rehabilitate this urban historical center, the most relevant in the Caribbean, and one of the most outstanding in the Western Hemisphere.
