The avifauna of Cuba include around 400 species, of which 28 are endemics, humans have introduced 10, and 159 are noted as incidental. Two species are known to be extinct, and two others possibly are. Fifteen species are globally threatened.
Cuban birds range from the tiny Bee hummingbird to the smallest bird in the world, to the sizeable magnificent frigate-bird. Around 70% of the birds found in Cuba are migratory, and 28 can be found only in the island including the colorful Cuban trogon which is Cuba's national bird. In Cuba, it is known as the Tocororo because of its call. It’s also home to the world's largest and rarest woodpecker, the Ivory-billed Woodpecker. Many birds migrate to Cuba during the winter months and are considered common in Cuba during that time, and other species are less frequent during the winter or only stopover on the island during migration. |
