Before we drove to the lovely and historic Amelia Island on the Atlantic coast of Florida, I had never heard of it. Amelia Island is one of the Sea Islands, a chain of barrier islands that reaches along the east coast of the United States all the way from South Carolina to Florida. It’s only about 13 miles long and 4 miles wide, but it’s a charming place full of beautiful Victorian mansions.

The purists howled over a decade ago when New York City was accused of Disneyfying Times Square. The funk and grit were replaced by family fare, but with the changes came a friendlier New York. Cab drivers volunteered to be less abrasive. Visitors are less likely to encounter muggers.
Does skiing down a black diamond trail make my pulse race? Not really. How about twisting around turns on the world’s fastest roller coaster? Not so much. Perhaps a cage dive with a great white shark? Nope. Could it be finding a Ralph Lauren Purple Label cashmere sweater for a mere fraction of its retail price?
