This blog shares a firsthand experience of Lapland’s most enchanting adventures. Discover the magic of Finnish Lapland through a traveler's eyes—Northern Lights, reindeer rides, husky safaris, and more in Posio, Finland. For one lucky traveler, a long-held dream to explore Finland finally came true this past winter—and the result was nothing short of magical. Drawn to the wild, untouched beauty of the Nordic region and its crisp, cool air, our traveler set off on a four-day/3-night adventure to Posio, Finland. Delta of Scandinavia, a Signature Destination Specialist for Scandinavia and Iceland, curated the experience, which delivered more wonder than anyone could have imagined. Arrival in Posio The journey began with a short flight from Helsinki to Kuusamo, followed by a scenic 45-minute drive to Posio with Elisa, the owner and chief product officer of Delta of Scandinavia. Rest assured, all safety measures were in place during the entire trip. Upon arrival, while previewing the adventure ahead, the group settled in with a traditional Finnish lunch—cabbage, beef casserole, local sides, and a refreshing Tornion beer. Their first activity didn't begin until the evening, so the traveler and a companion decided to explore the nearby Kirintövaara ski hill. Despite only one open groomed slope, it offered the perfect opportunity to test out skis and even try a T-Bar lift for the first time—a small thrill. After dinner—reindeer with mashed potatoes and mushroom soup—they suited up in thick neoprene suits for one of Finland's most surreal experiences: ice floating. Beneath a darkening sky on Lake Kiritöjärvi, a hole cut into the frozen surface became their gateway to serenity. Suspended in the cold black water, they floated silently under the stars, later warming up with hot Lappish berry juice by a roaring fire. It was just the beginning of an enchanting weekend. That night, the group checked into their home away from home--Igloo #6 at Lights of Lapland. One of ten Nordic-inspired cabins nestled in a spruce forest, the glass-walled igloo offered uninterrupted views of the lake and sky. Furnished with minimalist Scandinavian design, cozy Pentik accents, and floor-to-ceiling windows, the space felt like a front-row seat to nature's grand performance. And the universe didn't disappoint. Chasing the Northern Lights As the group sipped drinks at the bar, Elisa shouted, "The Northern Lights are out!" Everyone ran outside—and there they were: the Revontulet, or "Fox Fires," swirling above. In Finnish folklore, a mythical black fox creates these lights by brushing its tail across the snow, sparking the sky into flame. The lights appeared faint at first—wispy clouds of green and purple—but through the camera lens, they exploded into vivid hues, dancing in waves of pink, red, violet, and emerald. With frozen fingers and breathless awe, they captured photo after photo until finally retreating to the warmth of their igloo, where the lights continued to shimmer overhead as they drifted to sleep, still in awe of the breathtaking spectacle they had just witnessed. The next morning brought a classic Finnish breakfast—sliced meats, cheeses, karjalanpiirakka, and strong coffee—before heading to Valkeapeura Reindeer Farm. In the quiet forest, they met a five-year-old reindeer and its handler, who guided them on a short sleigh ride through the snowy woods. Later, they hand-fed lichen to the rest of the herd and learned how reindeer are individually named and lovingly cared for, especially during the harsh winter months. Reindeer Farm Visit That afternoon, the adventure continued with a husky sledding safari led by a rugged Finnish host who looked like he had stepped straight out of a Viking saga. After learning how to drive the sleds and help the dogs on uphill climbs, the group took off through the snow on a 10-kilometer ride, swapping positions halfway through so everyone had a turn to mush. The husky farm was home to over 100 dogs, each carefully bred, bunked, and well-fed. Even in retirement, the dogs enjoy a life of leisure, playing with the pack and basking in well-earned rest. After a comforting meal of meatballs, rice, and vegetables, that evening was time for one last thrill: snowmobiling under the Northern Lights. As they suited up for the ride, the sky lit up again, with classic green streaks stretching across the horizon like silk ribbons. They tore across the frozen lake on snowmobiles, chasing the lights to better vantage points and snapping more photos as the sky performed just for them. Back in bed, the traveler lay beneath the stars again, the auroras dancing above until sleep claimed them again. But nature had one more moment of connection in store. At 4 AM, the traveler awoke eye-to-eye with three towering trees framed by the igloo's panoramic window. The largest one seemed to wave a branch in greeting—a deeply spiritual moment filled with comfort, bliss, and the bittersweet ache of impending goodbyes, a moment that underscored the profound connection with nature experienced throughout the journey. On their final day, the group hiked to Jääputoukset—a series of frozen waterfalls nestled along an old logging trail. Each cascade, uniquely frozen in shades of blue and white, was a sculpture carved by winter's hand. After the 5km hike, they gathered around a campfire in a wooden hut, roasting traditional Finnish makkara sausages, then warmed up with lamb stew and flatbread at a nearby restaurant. Their last hours were spent sharing stories with new friends from Belgium and passing along hard-earned tips on spotting the elusive Northern Lights. Back in Igloo #6, they curled up one final time in their cozy sanctuary, the quiet hum of the forest and the distant glow of the sky marking the perfect end to a once-in-a-lifetime journey, a journey that was enriched by the shared experiences and camaraderie with fellow adventurers.
