Exploring Tahiti and Beyond: My Windstar Breeze Cruise Through the Society Islands

As I gazed out the airplane window during our descent into Papeete, Tahiti, the vibrant turquoise waters and lush green mountains took my breath away. This was the beginning of an extraordinary journey through French Polynesia, a place of unparalleled beauty and serenity. My Windstar Breeze cruise through the Society Islands promised to deliver the ultimate blend of luxury and adventure, and it did not disappoint.

A Warm Welcome in Tahiti
​Our adventure began at the Intercontinental Tahiti Resort, where the warm Polynesian hospitality set the tone for our stay. With its overwater bungalows and infinity pools, the resort was the perfect pre-cruise retreat. We savored Tahitian delicacies, strolled through vibrant gardens, and marveled at the island's spectacular sunset over Moorea in the distance.

On my second day in Tahiti, I embarked on a full-day tour of the island's west side. The journey included visits to world heritage sites, a delicious lunch at a local restaurant by the ocean, and a drive to the end of the road in Tahiti Iti, where the surfing Olympics were hosted. The experience deepened my appreciation of the island's cultural and natural treasures.

Its intimate size allowed us to visit hidden gems inaccessible to larger ships. From the moment we boarded, the attentive crew ensured our comfort. Champagne greeted us at check-in, and the spacious staterooms provided a cozy yet elegant retreat for the week ahead.
Island Hopping Through ParadiseEach day brought a new island and a new adventure:

• Moorea: Known as the "Magical Island," Moorea offered stunning views of jagged volcanic peaks and emerald lagoons. I had the opportunity to inspect the Hilton Moorea site and spent the day there with two other ladies who were also sailing on the ship. It was an excellent way to experience the island's charm and hospitality firsthand.
• Raiatea: The sacred heart of Polynesia, Raiatea, is steeped in history and culture. We explored ancient marae (temples) and cruised along the Faaroa River, surrounded by lush mangroves. The day on the private motu was unforgettable, filled with kayaking, snorkeling, paddleboarding, and soaking in the sun. A delicious buffet and grilled lunch on the beach made the experience even more special. Windstar brought the onboard experience ashore, ensuring sailors had everything needed for a wonderful day at the beach.
• Taha'a: Often called the "Vanilla Island," Taha'a was a sensory delight. We toured a vanilla plantation, learning about the intricate cultivation process. The fragrance of vanilla lingered as we relaxed on a private motu (islet), enjoying a traditional Polynesian feast.
• Bora Bora: No words can truly capture the magic of Bora Bora. The iconic overwater bungalows and vivid blue lagoon felt like a dream. I was invited to tag along in a rental car with fellow travelers, and we drove around the island, stopping at the InterContinental Bora Bora and taking in breathtaking views. We also spent a little time on the beach before a sudden rain shower added a dramatic touch to the day. The farewell dinner on a motu featured fire dancers and traditional Tahitian music, making it a night to remember.
• Huahine: Known for its untouched beauty, Huahine felt like stepping back in time. We visited archaeological sites and wandered through a small fishing village, gaining insight into the traditional Polynesian way of life.

Life Onboard the Windstar BreezeBetween island adventures, life aboard the Windstar Breeze was equally enchanting. The open-bridge policy allowed us to chat with the captain and crew, learning about navigation and local lore. Dining onboard was a culinary journey, with menus inspired by the flavors of Polynesia. Every meal celebrated the region's bounty, from fresh seafood to tropical fruits.

Being a vegetarian on board was not an issue as they made food to order for me as I wished. The restaurant manager always checked on me to ensure I enjoyed my meals. There was plenty of variety; my favorite place to relax was the Yacht Club. Here, I could grab a cup of coffee, work a little, and enjoy the serenity of the seas with stunning views of the islands.

The yacht's water sports platform became a favorite hangout, offering complimentary kayaking, paddle boarding, and snorkeling right off the back of the ship. On our final day, I spent half the day onboard, enjoying the marina, kayaking, and simply soaking up the atmosphere. As the sun dipped below the horizon each evening, we gathered on deck for sunset cocktails, basking in the golden glow.

A Farewell to ParadiseAs the Windstar Breeze returned to Tahiti, I felt a bittersweet gratitude and longing. This journey had been a feast for the senses, a perfect blend of relaxation, adventure, and cultural immersion. French Polynesia had cast its spell, and I knew I would carry its beauty and tranquility long after returning home.
