There's something special about waking up before dawn to catch a flight. The quiet anticipation, the rush of packing last-minute essentials, the hope that everything goes smoothly… and then the inevitable: delays. 😅 My day began at 5:00 a.m. to catch a 7:10 a.m. flight from Nashville to Boston. The flight was delayed (of course), and we took off around 8:20 a.m. Despite the delay, I was filled with excitement — Boston has always intrigued me, and it felt oddly familiar. Then it hit me: I had a quick layover here last year on my way to Europe! Getting to the Hotel: A Mini AdventureOnce I landed, the adventure truly began — just getting to the rideshare pickup was an experience. It involved multiple elevators, a trek to Parking Lot G, and a 15-minute wait for my Lyft driver. When she arrived and turned on the GPS, she casually mentioned we'd be going through tunnels, and that I would be responsible for the tolls. 🙄 As we drove, I realized something was missing. One of my favorite earrings had vanished. I searched everywhere — in the car, my purse, my clothes — but it was gone. That earring had been with me on so many journeys. Goodbye, old friend. 😢 Hotel Check-in & First Impressions When I arrived at The Newbury Boston, only one front desk clerk was assisting another guest, so I had a short wait before checking into my elegant, warm-toned room — complete with a cozy bed and a perfect little workspace. Located in the heart of Back Bay, this landmark hotel (formerly the Ritz-Carlton and Taj Boston) beautifully blends classic charm with modern luxury. With features like the Contessa rooftop restaurant and The Street Bar, The Newbury felt both refined and welcoming. I unpacked, freshened up, and headed out to find lunch. Lunch at DIG: Healthy, Fresh, and FillingI found a nearby spot called Dig, which had great reviews for vegetarians. Just an 8-minute walk from the hotel, it offered a "pick your protein and sides" style menu. I chose salmon with rice, sweet potatoes, and corn salad, paired with peach tea. Simple and satisfying! Wandering Boston: A Self-Guided City WalkAfter lunch, I decided to walk off my meal and make my way to the famous Mike's Pastry in the North End — about 35 minutes away on foot. That walk quickly turned into an unforgettable self-guided tour through Boston's historic and artistic heartbeat. I strolled through the Public Garden (founded in 1837) — a green oasis filled with boaters, families, and peaceful energy. It reminded me of Nashville's Centennial Park. Then I came across tennis courts, a powerful sculpture called The Embrace by Hank Willis Thomas, and countless other public art pieces that stopped me in my tracks. I found myself in front of a stunning church with a fountain in view, and to the side, a building with a golden dome that sparkled in the sun. Boston has a way of surprising you at every corner. Freedom Trail, History & Heartfelt MomentsAs I continued walking, I stumbled onto the Freedom Trail and a historic burying ground. I paused to take it all in — the centuries-old gravestones, the sense of reverence, the whispers of history in the air. It was a moment that made me feel like a part of Boston's rich history. Right before reaching Mike's Pastry, I encountered a moving and emotional installation — The New England Holocaust Memorial. Its glass towers were inscribed with real testimonials and stories that gave me goosebumps. I stood in silence, grateful for the time to reflect, a moment I hadn't anticipated but one that added a profound layer to my journey. Sweet Treats & Sweet Moments
Finally, I made it to Mike's Pastry — a legendary Boston bakery. Despite the crowds, I managed to sneak to the side, check out the display case, and order a pistachio cannoli, a cranberry turnover, and an eclair. The cannoli was filled with pistachio cream, the turnover was cherry delicious and crunchy, and the eclair was smooth, sweet chocolate. I sent a photo to my friend back home, who recommended that I visit this bakery and asked, "Should I get gelato too?" Her response: "Of course you should!" So I did. Mango and coconut. 🍨 I found a park bench near a kids' water play area and watched them have the time of their lives, wishing I could join — but I wasn't exactly dressed for splashing around. 😂 Back at the Hotel I walked 25 minutes back to my hotel and realized the beautiful historic park I passed earlier is right across the street! I'll definitely explore that again tomorrow. Back in my room, I tried to settle in to get some work done… but there was a constant thumping sound. Turns out my room was next to the freight elevator. Not ideal for Zoom calls or a good night's sleep. So I requested a room change, and the hotel kindly obliged. Tomorrow, the real reason I'm in Boston begins — an early start for a conference I'm attending. But I'm so glad I carved out time to explore the city today. It gave me everything I didn't expect: delays, detours, emotional moments, a lost earring… and a very full heart. ❤️ Have you been to Boston? What's your favorite hidden gem in the city?
