My recent trip to Cuba was unforgettable for many reasons—stunning landscapes, vibrant culture, and the welcoming warmth of its people. But Hurricane Helene decided to make things a little more interesting! Despite the weather challenges, we adapted and discovered more of what makes Cuba unique. From rain-soaked Havana tours to sunny countryside adventures, this trip was an incredible testament to the resilience and beauty of the island and its people. The best part? Our small group was a beacon of support for the local community every step of the way. Here's how we navigated our Cuban adventure amid the storm and sunshine, always mindful of the impact we could make. Day 1-2: Exploring Havana's Heart in the Rain When Hurricane Helene's rain hit the western part of Cuba, we had to adjust our plans. Our originally scheduled trip to Viñales was moved, but we didn't let the rain slow us down! Instead, we spent Wednesday exploring Old Havana and took shelter in some fascinating indoor spots, including a local art museum and the iconic Havana Rum Factory. Our clients enjoyed learning about Cuban art and culture while staying dry. In the evening, we celebrated our first night with a delicious welcome dinner at **Antojos**, one of Old Havana's most famous private restaurants. Cuban hospitality and rich flavors were the perfect way to kick off our adventure. Day 3: Sunshine in Vedado and a Rescheduled Viñales Tour The sun finally appeared on Thursday, and we embarked on a Vedado city tour. We explored this vibrant neighborhood filled with historical sites, lush parks, and 1950s architecture. The change in weather allowed our clients to experience another side of Havana. By Friday, Viñales was back on the schedule! Despite some lingering effects of the storm, we had a fantastic day exploring La Cueva del Indio, the Mural de la Pre-History, and enjoying a delicious, home-cooked meal at a local farm. Our clients learned about the unique tobacco and coffee farming process and even got to taste Cuba's one-of-a-kind Guayabita del Pinar rum—a truly unique and intriguing experience! Day 4: Hemingway's Finca Vigía and a Culinary Experience in Cojímar Saturday was another beautiful day as we visited Finca Vigía, the former home of Ernest Hemingway. This stop gave clients a glimpse into the famed author's life, who fell in love with Cuba's charm. We followed that with a delightful lunch at Ajiaco, a local gem known for its authentic Cuban cuisine. Day 5: A Day Trip to Varadero and Río Canimar Sunday took us on a full-day adventure to **Varadero**, but not before stopping at **Río Canimar** for a relaxing boat ride and a mesmerizing performance by local artists showcasing Cuba's Taíno heritage. When we arrived in Varadero, we initially stopped at Waco, a private restaurant that had received national awards. However, the prices were too high, so our guide recommended a different spot. For the same price, we ended up at a lovely beachside restaurant, where we enjoyed a delicious lunch and **four drinks per person, sunbeds, umbrellas, and the refreshing Caribbean breeze**. Afterward, we took a leisurely walk along the beach before returning to Havana just as the rain returned. Day 6: Farewell to Havana and an Art-Filled Day at Muraleando Our last day in Cuba, Monday was all about giving back to the local community. We spent the morning at Muraleando, a community art project where people come together to create beautiful murals and teach art to locals and visitors alike. The project has transformed the neighborhood into an outdoor gallery—a must-see for anyone visiting Havana. Our farewell dinner took place at Casa Mia, a cozy private restaurant by el Malecón. We shared a delicious seafood feast (the famous Cuban Mariscada) and reflected on our incredible experiences throughout the week. The Accommodations: Home Away from Home We stayed in a beautiful casa with eight rooms, each equipped with a private bathroom, terrace, and incredible views of el Morro de la Habana from the rooftop. The casa was located in a safe and convenient area, and our hosts, Yudith, Alexander, and Roberto, ensured every guest felt right at home with exceptional service and a homemade breakfast each morning featuring fresh fruits, eggs, coffee, and guava juice. Exclusive Experience: Ballet Nacional and VIP Access One of the most unique highlights of our trip was the opportunity to attend a performance by the renowned Ballet Nacional de Cuba. Our excellent guide arranged tickets for my clients, and they enjoyed an unforgettable evening of Cuban ballet. To make the experience even more unique, Laura Alonzo, the daughter of Prima Ballerina Alicia Alonso, personally invited us to a private reception after the show. We also got exclusive backstage access to meet the dancers before they went on stage—an experience most travelers could only dream of! Despite the weather challenges, we had a fantastic time in Cuba, and our next tour is already scheduled for "January 14-21, 2025".
