The one thing I wasn’t prepared for?
The heat!

It was over 100 degrees every day.  As someone from Cuba, I love warm weather, but even this Cuban girl has limits!  We adjusted our plans, taking walks in the mornings and early evenings, enjoying a river boat tour and a trolley tour around the city.  We even found a Cuban restaurant where I enjoyed some tostones and a Mango Mojito before deciding it was simply too hot to walk back, so we took a Lyft instead.

Then came another surprise.
My husband had tickets to a concert at the Majestic Theatre, just a five-minute walk from our hotel.  I asked who we were going to see.
“It’s a surprise.”
When I looked at the big screen inside the theater, I discovered it was Dean Z, the Elvis Presley tribute artist.  What a show!  I won’t spoil it, but it was absolutely fantastic, and I would definitely recommend seeing him if you have the opportunity.

What I loved most about this weekend, though, was being present.  No client itineraries.  No hotel research.  No emails.  No travel logistics.  Just me, my husband, and the opportunity to be a tourist for a change.

I even wanted to visit the Japanese Tea Garden again on Sunday morning.  Still, when it was already over 80 degrees at 8 AM, we decided another River Walk stroll sounded much better.

My recommendation?  Visit San Antonio in the spring or fall.
You’ll have much more comfortable weather for exploring everything this wonderful city has to offer.  And after a few days of relaxing, I came home ready for a very different kind of journey.

Cuba: A Journey That Comes From the Heart

After my quick visit to Cuba in early August, I shared how heartbroken I was by what I saw back home.  The suffering is real.  People are struggling to get necessities like food, medicine, electricity, and other everyday essentials.  But something beautiful happened afterward.

People kept helping.
Friends donated money and supplies.  One friend gave me two pieces of luggage so I could bring even more donations on future trips—and in one suitcase, she added medicine, food, shoes, and medical masks.

I also had donations at home that I couldn’t take with me in August, so I packed a 52-pound box and shipped it to Cuba through an agency a friend recommended.  It will ship by air this Friday and be delivered directly to my sister’s home.  Inside are more medicines, food, battery-operated fans, rechargeable light bulbs, and other necessities.

Friends—and even a couple of clients who had already donated—have continued to contribute.  So far, another $420 has been donated.

And every dollar matters.  Sometimes it can be enough to help purchase something as simple as aspirin for someone who desperately needs it.

And you don’t have to spend money you can’t afford.  Ask your local church, food bank, dentist’s office, community organization, or local businesses if they can help you collect donations.  Ask your neighbors to help us fill a suitcase.

The world is waiting. Where will you go next?

It wasn’t because I was busy.  It was because it was incredibly hot; there was no electricity for most of the nights, and the mosquitoes seemed relentless.  I kept thinking about the people who live like this every day, not for three nights, not for a week, but month after month.

My sister told me something that I will never forget.  She said that never in a million years did she imagine that she would live through what she is experiencing today.  I told her I felt exactly the same way.

I remember when cooking with wood was part of my childhood. 

When I was a little girl, my grandmother cooked with wood in her kitchen.  Later, my family cooked with kerosene.  When I moved to Havana with my mother, we continued using kerosene until she eventually got natural gas.  Those memories belong to another time in my mind.  But today, my sister is once again cooking with fire.  Not because she wants to.  Because she has no choice.

When there is no electricity, she builds a makeshift fire pit outside using charcoal.  She uses whatever she can find to get the fire started so she can prepare a meal for her family.
And electricity?  Sometimes they have it for only about two hours a day.  Two hours.  Imagine trying to plan your entire life around two hours of electricity.

Then I began seeing the reality outside her home.

When I walked through Santiago, one of the first things I noticed was how few cars were on the streets.  There were almost no vehicles except those being used for transportation.  The cost of getting from El Caney, where my sister lives, into central Santiago was around 1,500 pesos each way.  I remember when that same trip cost around 25 pesos.  The transportation from the airport and back was even more shocking—around 30,000 pesos. 

These aren’t abstract numbers to the people who live there.  They are barriers.  I also saw rechargeable fans like the one I purchased for my family for about $26 USD being sold on the streets for $70 to $80 USD.  I couldn’t believe it.

Who can afford that?

My pregnant niece hasn’t received her salary in two months.  How do you buy a $70 fan when you don’t have your paycheck?

I began to understand that people are simply trying to survive however they can, buying something when they can, reselling it when they can, trading, sharing, and helping one another.

Even the stores tell a story.

Some of the stores that once operated in Cuban convertible pesos, or CUC, now price their merchandise in U.S. dollars.  The prices can look remarkably similar to what we might see in the United States.  But the people shopping there do not earn American wages.  And many people cannot even access those stores unless they have a USD-based debit card.

During one visit, the store had no electricity, so the doors were open.  But a table was placed across the entrance.  You had to stand outside and look in to see what was available.

It was surreal.

And yet, people keep finding ways to survive.  Some families have managed to install solar panels on their roofs.  Others sit outside under trees trying to escape the heat while they wait for the electricity to return so they can cook.

And then there were the people I came to help.

I arrived in Santiago with the donations so many of you helped make possible.  I distributed supplies to my two pregnant nieces and my sister.

Then my sister started telling me about other people in the neighborhood who needed help.  There was another pregnant woman.  Two women with newborn babies.  Older neighbors.

People who needed mosquito nets.  People who needed vitamins or cold medicine. One donation included a blood glucose meter, and I was able to give it to an older woman who needed one.  The supplies were never going to be enough for everyone.  I knew that before I arrived. But what I didn’t expect was how grateful people would be for something that, to many of us, seems so small.

A rechargeable light.
A fan.
A few baby clothes.

Something to help a family get through another difficult week.  I asked whether they had received any humanitarian donations sent to Cuba from other countries.  The people I spoke with told me they had not.  They also said Santiago often feels forgotten, with much of the assistance and attention concentrated in Havana.  I can’t speak for every donation effort or every organization, but I can tell you what I saw and what my family experienced.

And what I saw was heartbreaking.

This was only a small amount of help.

I left Cuba knowing that I had helped some people.  But I also left knowing how many people I could not help.

That is the hardest part.

You hand a family a mosquito net, and you see the gratitude in their eyes.  You give someone medicine they couldn’t find.  You hand a pregnant woman something for her baby.  And you’re grateful that you were able to do something.  But then you look around and realize so many more people need help.

My heart aches for my family.  It aches for my friends, and it aches for the people I met who are simply trying to make it through another day.

So I’m going back.

My October 1–7 Cuba Humanitarian Journey is no longer just an idea on a calendar.  After what I witnessed in Santiago, I know I need to do more.

On October 1, I’ll return to Havana with a small group of travelers who want to experience Cuba through meaningful human connection while helping deliver humanitarian supplies.  After my travelers return home, I’ll continue on to Santiago to spend more time with my family and bring additional supplies to those who need them.

​After my travelers return home, I plan to continue to Santiago to spend more time with my family and bring more supplies to those who need them.  Some people have already told me they are interested in continuing with me to Santiago.  And one friend has already donated two additional pieces of luggage, one filled with food, medicine, and medical masks for a local clinic.

This is how the mission grows.
One person.
One suitcase.
One family.
One act of kindness at a time.

But we need more. 

Should you not be able to travel with me in October, you can still be part of this journey.  You can sponsor humanitarian supplies.  You can donate items from our supply list.

You can ask your dentist or medical office if they have extra toothbrushes, toothpaste, masks, first-aid supplies, or other items they can contribute.  You can ask your church, food bank, community organization, or workplace to help collect shelf-stable food and essential supplies.

And if you’re shopping during Labor Day sales, consider picking up a few items from the humanitarian supply list and helping me fill another suitcase.

Every pound matters.
Every item matters.

And every person who says, “I can help,” becomes part of this journey.

I don’t know how to fix what is happening in Cuba.

But I know what I can do. I can show up.  I can bring what I can carry. I can connect people who want to help with people who need help.  And I can keep telling the story of the people I love.

I left Cuba with a broken heart.  But I also left with a renewed sense of purpose.  Because sometimes we cannot change everything.  But we can change something.  And for the family receiving a mosquito net tonight, the woman with the newborn baby, the pregnant mother wondering how she will get through another blackout, or the older woman who can finally check her blood sugar, something matters.

Because of your feedback, the inaugural Cuba Humanitarian Journey will take place October 1–7, 2026.

The extra time gives us an even greater opportunity to welcome additional travelers, collect more humanitarian supplies, and extend our reach to more families and communities throughout Cuba.

And what a difference just a few weeks have made.

Together, we have already raised more than $1,800, and one of my very first Cuba travelers generously donated two mosquito nets to help protect families from mosquito-borne illnesses.

The first 85 pounds of humanitarian supplies are already packed and ready for Cuba.
Inside those suitcases are first aid supplies, rechargeable lights, battery-operated fans, charging cables, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soaps, baby clothes, seasoning, canned foods, tuna packets, and many other everyday essentials that have become increasingly difficult for families to access.

​As I zipped those suitcases closed, I realized they were carrying much more than supplies.
They were carrying kindness.

Every rechargeable light represents someone who wanted a family to have light during another blackout.

Every first aid item represents someone who wanted a parent to have access to basic care.
Every baby outfit represents someone celebrating a child they’ve never met.

Every donation tells a story of compassion.

Although these first suitcases are ready for departure, this mission is only beginning.
Our next hosted humanitarian journey to Cuba takes place October 1–7, and there is still time to make an even greater impact.

With Labor Day approaching, many stores will be offering excellent sales on school supplies, personal care items, rechargeable batteries, flashlights, and other essentials.  If you’ve been looking for a way to help, this is a wonderful opportunity to purchase items that will go directly to families in Cuba.

You can also ask your local church, dentist, physician’s office, community organization, or workplace if they would be willing to donate supplies.  Many clinics have sample-size hygiene products, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and other items that can make a meaningful difference.

This journey has reminded me that the distance between Nashville and Cuba may be measured in miles, but the distance between people can disappear through a single act of kindness.

​Sheyla Paz shares the vision behind the Cuba Humanitarian Journey, an experience created to connect travelers with local communities through meaningful cultural exchange, compassion, and support. This journey was born from a personal need to help my family and has grown into something much bigger: an opportunity for travelers to experience Cuba through human connection while bringing essential supplies and support to families facing difficult circumstances.

Nine days ago, I shared a message inviting people to travel with me to Cuba.

I was wearing a blue shirt that said “Travel Elevates.” It was my invitation to others to see Cuba not only as a beautiful destination, but as a place filled with people, stories, and communities that deserve to be seen and supported.

The video received 751 views.
And then… silence.
No comments.  No messages.
I wondered if anyone was listening.

So on Saturday morning, instead of waiting for someone else to respond, I took a photo of my living room floor in Nashville.

That floor had become my temporary warehouse for Cuba.

Spread across it were supplies that may seem simple, but represent something much deeper: 12 baby bottles for my two pregnant nieces, 10 rechargeable lights for families dealing with power shortages, two fans that do not require electricity, Sazón my mother had not tasted in months, and a food scale for my sister, who has been feeding her family mostly white rice because that is what is available.

These were not just items.

They were reminders that behind every shortage is a person—a mother, a child, a family doing their best.

I shared the photo and the story behind it.

I shared that my mother had been sick and had not texted in several days.  I shared that my aunt had a fever and was cooking over wood smoke.  I shared that my nieces were expecting babies and needed supplies that every newborn should have.

And then something beautiful happened.
People listened.
Not with likes.
With action.

Nine people contributed the first $800.  They were friends, supporters, colleagues, and people who did not know my family personally but decided they wanted to help.
Then four more people reached out.

Today, 13 people have contributed a total of $1,250 toward this humanitarian effort.
A living room floor in Nashville became the starting point for bringing hope to families in Cuba.

Then I received a message from my sister.
“Mamá texted me.  She is feeling better.”
I cried when I read those words.
That message was worth more than any donation.
Then she shared another piece of news:
“The girls are due around September 9–14.”
Those dates had originally been just travel dates on my calendar.
Now they mean something entirely different.

The same week I planned to arrive in Cuba may be the week two new babies enter my family’s world.

Two babies who need bottles.  Two babies who deserve comfort and care.  Two babies whose arrival reminded me why this journey matters.

This is why we travel.

The Cuba Humanitarian Journey is not simply a trip. It is an invitation to experience Cuba beyond the typical tourist path—to meet its people, understand its resilience, celebrate its culture, and create meaningful connections while bringing support to families who need it.
Because the most memorable journeys are not measured only by the places we visit.
They are measured by the lives we touch and the stories we bring home.

I am currently finalizing the dates for the inaugural Cuba Humanitarian Journey.  I will make the final decision by July 31 between September 9–14, 2026, and the first week of October 2026, based on the dates that allow the greatest number of interested travelers to participate.

Standing quietly along the fence, we watched a shepherd work in perfect harmony with his Border Collie.  With nothing more than a series of whistles, the dog instinctively gathered the flock, turning left, turning right, stopping on command, and guiding every sheep exactly where it needed to go.  It was a remarkable display of trust built over years, not minutes.

Afterward, we cuddled energetic sheepdog puppies destined to become future working dogs and met newborn lambs resting peacefully beside their mothers.  It wasn’t an attraction created for tourists.  It was simply life in rural Ireland, and we had been invited to witness it.

As we continued around the Ring of Kerry, cyclists wound their way along the narrow roads ahead of us, naturally slowing our pace.  Instead of feeling delayed, we found ourselves appreciating every curve, every stone wall, every emerald hillside unfolding outside our windows.

Some of the day’s best moments weren’t planned at all.
We paused at Ladies View because the light was too beautiful to pass by.  We lingered over lunch at The Moorings, a welcoming restaurant in a village where large tour buses rarely stop.  There wasn’t one headline attraction that made the day unforgettable.

It was the luxury of having time.
Time to notice.
Time to listen.
Time to connect.
That’s the kind of travel I believe in.

And it’s exactly why I’m so excited to return to Colombia in February 2027.
Because the journey we’re creating isn’t about collecting famous landmarks; it’s about meeting the people who give those places their soul.

In Medellín, we’ll step into a neighborhood dance studio where locals perfect their salsa before heading out for the evening.  I’ve danced salsa for years, but Colombian style has its own rhythm and character.  Our instructor will patiently guide us through every step, sharing not only the technique but also the culture and history behind the music.

We’ll enjoy lunch in Comuna 13 at a restaurant where food has become a catalyst for opportunity.  Every recipe carries generations of family tradition, and every meal supports programs that continue transforming the neighborhood through art and education.  You’ll leave with more than a full stomach—you’ll leave with a story.

In Cali, the world’s salsa capital, we’ll meet the musicians before the performance begins.  You’ll hear the instruments warming up, learn about the rhythms that define Colombian salsa, and experience the music long before the curtain rises.

Then, in Cartagena, instead of wandering through rows of souvenir shops, we’ll spend time with women artisans whose handcrafted mochila bags help provide for their families.  These aren’t anonymous vendors.  They’re talented women with names, stories, and generations of craftsmanship woven into every piece they create.

Behind the scenes, my trusted partners at Impulse Travel handle every logistical detail—from hotels and transportation to local permits and operations.

My role is different.
I’ll be there with you, introducing you to the people who have welcomed me into their communities and sharing the relationships that transform a vacation into something deeply personal.

Because that’s the difference between taking a tour and becoming part of a community.
Ireland gave me a brilliant sheepdog named Jess, warm brown bread shared over lunch, and a handcrafted wool headband that still reminds me of County Kerry.

Colombia will give you a salsa instructor counting in Spanish, a chef whose kitchen nourishes her neighborhood, and an artisan who proudly signs the piece she created with her own hands.

Those are the moments you’ll remember long after you’ve unpacked your suitcase.

Because the best journeys aren’t measured by how many places you visit.

They’re measured by the people who change you along the way.

The window for U.S. citizens to travel legally to Cuba is open — for now. But it may not stay that way.
Under the current U.S. regulations, you can visit Cuba through the Support for the Cuban People license. This means you’re not just a tourist to them— you’re a lifeline. When you travel with intention, you uplift real people through every experience.
What does this look like?

• Staying in casas particulares (family-owned homes)
• Eating at private, home-grown restaurants
• Working with local drivers, guides, and artists
• Bringing essential items like over-the-counter medications or hygiene products
• Booking through small, woman-owned agencies like mine, with deep roots and real connections on the island

I was born and raised in Cuba. My family still lives there. And I’ve dedicated my business to creating immersive, legal, culturally respectful travel experiences that support everyday Cubans.

Each offered its own distinct style while sharing the warm hospitality and central location that make them excellent options for travelers exploring Dublin.  Later that afternoon, I also had the opportunity to visit The Westbury, one of Dublin’s premier five-star hotels, known for its elegant accommodations and exceptional service.

Our Taste of Ireland journey officially began the second day after their arrival, a six-day adventure that embraced Ireland’s beauty without rushing through the city.  From Dublin to Killarney, Galway to the Cliffs of Moher, every day offered space to explore, connect, and be present.

Days 1 & 2: Settling Into Dublin
After arriving in Dublin, we did something many tours don’t allow enough time for: we eased into the destination.  No early-morning departures.  No packed sightseeing schedule.
Instead, we wandered through the city, explored Trinity College, enjoyed our first perfectly poured Guinness, and soaked in the atmosphere of Ireland’s vibrant capital.

I always believe the first day of an international trip should be about arrival, not exhaustion.
Those extra moments to adjust, stroll, and breathe set the tone for everything that followed.

Day 3: Dublin to Killarney — The Journey Becomes the Destination
At 8 AM, we departed Dublin and headed south through the Irish countryside.  Rain accompanied us for much of the drive—a fitting welcome to Ireland’s legendary landscapes.

Bryan, our driver, guide, and tour director, pulled over alongside the road so we could step out and admire the Rock of Cashel, a magnificent medieval castle and historic site that caught our attention.  He generously gave us plenty of time to explore the area and take photographs at our own pace.  We might have lingered even longer, but a passing rain shower encouraged us to continue on our way.  

​From there, we continued to Blarney Castle.
While many visitors focus on kissing the famous Blarney Stone, I have always felt the gardens are one of the property’s true treasures.  Some travelers explored the grounds while one adventurous member of our group climbed to the top and shared photos of the view with the rest of us.

That is one of the advantages of small-group travel—everyone experiences the destination in their own way while still sharing the journey.

By late afternoon, we arrived at the Gleneagle Hotel in Killarney.  After dinner at the hotel and settling in, we headed into town for drinks and conversation before enjoying the remarkable sight of daylight lingering well past 9 PM.

​Day 4: A Day to Breathe in County Kerry
Killarney served as our base for exploring the renowned Ring of Kerry.  But unlike larger coach tours that seem determined to race from stop to stop, we embraced a slower rhythm.

One of the highlights of the day was visiting a sheep farm nestled among County Kerry’s rolling green hills.  There, we watched a sheep farmer work alongside his remarkable sheepdog (a breed called a Border Collie), guiding an entire flock across the landscape using only a series of whistles.  The dog responded instantly—stopping, turning left, turning right, and gathering the sheep with incredible precision.

We spent time petting playful sheepdog puppies destined to become future working dogs and meeting newborn lambs resting beside their mothers.  As we continued our journey around the Ring of Kerry, a group of cyclists led the way along the narrow, winding roads, encouraging us to slow down and savor the spectacular scenery unfolding outside our windows.

We stopped when the light over Ladies View became too beautiful to ignore.  We enjoyed lunch in a small village where tour buses rarely linger.  There wasn’t one headline attraction that defined the day.  Instead, it was the feeling of having time to experience Ireland rather than simply passing through it.

Day 5: Cliffs of Moher and a Medieval Evening.
The Wild Atlantic Way greeted us with misty skies that gradually gave way to sunshine as we approached the coast.

By 11 AM, we arrived at the Cliffs of Moher.
The weather was spectacular, with bright skies, dramatic ocean views, and enough wind to remind us just how powerful the Atlantic can be.

With two full hours to explore, our group wandered the cliff paths, admired the sweeping coastal vistas, and stood in awe of one of Ireland’s most breathtaking natural wonders.  No rushing, no watching the clock.  Just time to absorb the moment.

Later that afternoon, we continued to Limerick and checked into the Clayton Hotel before preparing for one of the most memorable evenings of the trip.  Dinner was held inside Bunratty Castle, where a traditional medieval banquet brought Ireland’s history to life through music, storytelling, and warm hospitality.  Between courses, performers shared tales of Ireland’s noble families while singers filled the ancient hall with music.

After returning to the hotel, nature offered one final surprise.  As the sun set close to 10 PM, fireworks appeared over the river outside my room, a completely unexpected and perfect ending to the day.

Day 6: Galway and One Last Dublin Evening
Our final full day began in Galway.  The city’s colorful Latin Quarter welcomed us with lively streets, local shops, and a charming riverside market.  Travelers enjoyed free time to browse handmade crafts, discover local products, and enjoy lunch at their own pace.
One of my favorite moments was seeing clients wander.  No schedule, no pressure.
Just the freedom to explore.

That afternoon, we returned to Dublin and checked into the Ashling Hotel, where thoughtful touches, including a personalized welcome card and chocolates waiting in the room, provided a memorable farewell.

That evening, we finally used the hop-on hop-off tickets we had saved from our first day.
We rode through the city, enjoyed a wonderful dinner together, shared stories from the week, and walked back along the River Liffey while the evening sun lingered in the sky.
At 9:30 PM, Dublin was still glowing.

The perfect final chapter to an unforgettable journey.  A Seamless Journey Home.  The next morning, Dublin’s U.S. Preclearance process made the journey home remarkably smooth.

By the time I landed in Boston, there were no customs lines to navigate before my connecting flight.  Even before everyone arrived home, my phone was already buzzing with messages.

“We’re already talking about the next one.” As a travel advisor, I can say there is no better compliment.

Why This Journey Worked.
The magic wasn’t just in the destinations.
It was in the pacing.
It was arriving at the Cliffs of Moher before the larger crowds.
It was having two hours to explore rather than forty rushed minutes.
It was enjoying a castle banquet without feeling exhausted afterward.
It was wandering Galway’s streets without being herded into souvenir shops.
It was ending in Dublin with enough time for a leisurely dinner and a sunset walk along the river.

A Different Kind of Adventure
On Tuesday, June 26, I remained onboard as instructed by the ship's doctor to reduce the swelling in my foot.

The day became an exercise in patience and recovery. That evening, the doctor helped me practice walking with a medical boot and a walking stick. Before taking another round of medication, he insisted I join him for a cappuccino to make sure I had something on my stomach.

It's often the small acts of kindness that leave the biggest impression.
By Wednesday morning, I was determined to make the most of my remaining time in the Galápagos. With the doctor's approval and permission from the expedition director, I was allowed to join a Zodiac excursion around Isla Edén.

The crew carefully assisted me on and off the Zodiac, making sure I was comfortable and safe every step of the way.

The reward was worth it.
As we cruised around the island, I watched blue-footed boobies perched along the shoreline, marine iguanas resting on volcanic rocks, and sea lions enjoying another beautiful Galápagos morning. After spending much of the previous day recovering, simply being back out on the water felt like a gift.
That afternoon, I joined one final glass-bottom boat excursion. While we didn't see as much marine life as on previous outings, it was another opportunity to appreciate the extraordinary ecosystem that makes the Galápagos unlike anywhere else on Earth.

The Extraordinary Care of the HX Team
The next morning began early.
At 6:30 a.m., the doctor arrived at my cabin to administer one final injection before travel day and escort me to breakfast. A ship inspection was scheduled later that morning, but unfortunately, I wasn't able to participate.

Thankfully, Aidan, one of the HX representatives, stepped in and recorded videos of the ship's various cabin categories for me so I wouldn't miss the opportunity to learn about the product.

That gesture perfectly reflected the spirit of the entire crew throughout the voyage.
When it was time to disembark, the team once again helped me board the Zodiac, assisted me onto the bus, and ensured a wheelchair was waiting at the airport. From the ship to the airport is only about five minutes, but every detail had already been arranged.

At the airport, another crew member helped check my luggage while a LATAM representative escorted me through security and to the gate.

One thing that surprised me was how seamlessly everything worked behind the scenes. Luis from the HX guest services team met us at the airport with our boarding passes already prepared, while our luggage tags had been given to us the night before. As someone who usually likes knowing every detail of an itinerary, it felt strange not knowing my exact flight information until that moment—but everything had been handled perfectly.

Seeing Travel Through a New Lens
The journey from the Galápagos to Quito included a stop in Guayaquil, where passengers deplaned and new guests boarded before we continued to Ecuador's capital.
At every stage, wheelchair assistance was waiting.

In Quito, transportation took me directly to the hotel, where I was assigned an accessible room. While the shower setup wasn't ideal for my situation, the comfortable bed and helpful staff made for a restful overnight stay.

The next morning, I enjoyed breakfast and spent most of the day catching up on work before meeting a fellow travel advisor from Quito whom I had previously met during Colombia Travel Mart.

Travel has a wonderful way of creating lasting friendships.
Seeing her again in her home country was a highlight of my time in Quito. She generously offered to take me to the airport and help me purchase medication for my mother before my flight home. Her kindness is something I will never forget.

An Unexpected Lesson in Accessibility
From Baltra, to Quito, to Atlanta and finally Nashville, wheelchair assistance accompanied me throughout the journey.

I slept through most of the flight to Atlanta—even missing the meal service—and was escorted directly to the Delta Sky Club during my connection before continuing home.
By the time I arrived in Nashville, I realized I had gained something unexpected from this experience.

For years, I have planned trips for clients with mobility challenges. I've arranged accessible accommodations, transportation, and special services. Yet experiencing those services firsthand gave me a completely different understanding of what travelers with accessibility needs encounter every time they travel.

I saw how much coordination happens behind the scenes.

I learned how important compassionate employees can be.

I experienced firsthand the relief of having assistance waiting exactly when and where it is needed.

As travel advisors, we often focus on destinations, hotels, excursions, and flights. This experience reminded me that accessibility can be just as important in creating a successful journey.

Looking Ahead to Ireland
The best news came after I returned home: my foot was not broken.
With that relief came excitement for my next adventure.

Today, I am packing and departing tomorrow—this time for Ireland, where I will be traveling alongside clients as we explore the Emerald Isle together.
Travel rarely goes exactly as planned. Sometimes the unexpected challenges become the experiences that teach us the most.

The Galápagos gave me incredible wildlife encounters, unforgettable landscapes, and lifelong memories. But it also provided a valuable reminder about resilience, kindness, and the importance of helping others navigate the world.

As I prepare for Ireland, I do so with a deeper appreciation for the people who make travel possible and a renewed commitment to serving every traveler, regardless of their needs.

​Arrival in the Galápagos: First Wet Landing & Wildlife Encounters
Our Galápagos expedition officially began with a very early wake-up call at 4:30 AM.  After breakfast at 5 AM, we headed to the airport for our flights from Quito to Guayaquil and then onward to Baltra in the Galápagos Islands.

Landing in the Galápagos felt surreal.  The airport may be tiny, but the excitement was huge.  Customs were smooth and efficient, and shortly after, we boarded a zodiac.  This small expedition boat carries only about 12 passengers at a time to reach the Santa Cruz II expedition ship.
After lunch and expedition briefings, we experienced our very first wet landing.
The moment my feet touched the shores of the Galápagos, I knew this destination was unlike anywhere else in the world.
We saw sea lions lounging along the beach, black marine iguanas sunbathing on volcanic rocks, endemic birds soaring overhead, and one of the most beautiful sunsets imaginable.  It was the perfect introduction to expedition cruising and the raw beauty of the Galápagos Islands.

That evening, we attended the captain’s welcome reception and dinner onboard while excitement filled the ship for the adventures ahead.

Exploring Quito: Churches, Chocolate & The Middle of the World
Before heading to the islands, we had the opportunity to explore Quito, Ecuador’s beautiful capital city.

Our city tour included visits to historic churches filled with intricate architecture and centuries of history.  During the tour, we also encountered peaceful protests outside the government palace while the president was working there that day.  Police officers were present throughout the area to maintain order, but what stood out to me most was the welcoming atmosphere — officers even interacted with visitors using puppets as a symbol of safety and community spirit.

One of my favorite experiences of the day was visiting Chez Tiff Artesanal, a local chocolate factory, where we learned about Ecuadorian chocolate production and enjoyed a tasting demonstration.  Ecuador is known for producing some of the world’s finest cacao, and the flavors were incredible.

Afterward, we headed to Crater Restaurant, known for its stunning views of the volcano crater.  Unfortunately, the weather was cloudy so that we couldn’t see the crater itself, but the lunch was absolutely delicious.

I enjoyed a fresh salad and a cooked shrimp ceviche prepared Ecuadorian-style — completely different from ceviches I’ve had in other countries.  It was served with popcorn, plantain chips, and a local tree nut on the side.  For dessert, I had cheese with dried plums, a surprisingly delicious combination.

Later, we visited the famous Middle of the World monument.
I had visited the Equator back in 2020 and remembered trying the famous egg-balancing challenge.  During that trip, I also purchased a beautiful piece of artwork from a local artist whose gallery was located right at the Equator.  Over the years, we stayed connected through Facebook, but I never told him I was returning to Ecuador.  When I walked into his gallery this time, he was completely surprised to see me standing there again.  It was such a special and heartfelt reunion, and he even gave me a thank-you gift for coming back to visit him.  This time, I also decided to attempt something different: balancing myself in a yoga tree pose directly on the equator line.

Let me tell you… It’s much harder than it looks, but I did it!

That evening, HX Expeditions hosted a wonderful dinner before our early departure to the Galápagos the next morning.

San Cristóbal Island: Blue-Footed Boobies & Giant Tortoises
Day four brought one of the most exciting wildlife days yet.
We started with a super early morning wet landing on San Cristóbal Island for a hike to observe red-footed boobies, blue-footed boobies, and frigate birds in their natural habitat.
One of the highlights was spotting a nesting blue-footed booby protecting two eggs right beside the trail.

After returning to the ship for breakfast, guests had the option to snorkel or explore by glass-bottom boat.  Since I don’t snorkel, I chose the glass-bottom boat experience, which still let me admire the incredible marine life beneath the surface.

Later that afternoon, we made a dry landing at the David Rodriguez National Park sanctuary, where giant tortoises roam freely in protected habitat areas.
We ended the day with yet another spectacular Galápagos sunset before returning to the ship.

Santa Fe Island: Sea Lions, Snakes & Stargazing
Santa Fe Island was one of the most visually fascinating days of the expedition.
As soon as we arrived for our wet landing, more than 30 sea lions welcomed us on the beach.  They played together, surfed through the waves, and came incredibly close to our group without fear.

It was honestly one of the cutest wildlife encounters I’ve ever experienced.
The island hike itself was short but rocky, reinforcing how important proper footwear is on expedition cruises.  Along the trail, we spotted endemic iguanas, giant cactuses, spiders, and unexpectedly… a snake.

While climbing over a large rock, I noticed what turned out to be a Galápagos racer snake, the only snake species known to inhabit the island.  Thankfully, our guide Dani explained that it was non-venomous, but seeing it so close on the trail was still a little terrifying.
Later, during another glass-bottom boat excursion, I saw colorful fish and ocean turtles gliding beneath us.

In the afternoon, we visited Plaza Sur Island, famous for its volcanic landscapes, marine iguanas, blue-footed boobies, and conservation projects involving giant cactuses.  Researchers are currently protecting young cacti from iguanas to study whether overgrazing is preventing them from reaching full size.

Nearby, we also passed Kicker Rock, one of the Galápagos’ most famous diving sites.
Back onboard, the crew greeted us with drinks and snacks on the aft deck while sharks circled the ship below.

That evening ended with one of the most magical experiences yet: stargazing.
The ship’s lights were turned off completely as our guide, Dani, pointed out constellations and shared mythology stories beneath an incredibly clear night sky.

Santa Cruz Island & An Unexpected Accident
Our full-day excursion on Santa Cruz Island began with a visit to the Charles Darwin Research Station, where we learned about giant tortoise conservation and incubation programs.

One fascinating detail was learning how scientists determine the sex of tortoises based on egg temperature exposure during incubation.

We also saw the famous giant tortoise known as Lonesome George, whose inability to reproduce became one of the Galápagos’ most well-known conservation stories.
Afterward, some guests chose to take a bike ride, while others traveled by bus to a local hacienda where sugar cane, coffee, and moonshine are produced.

We later visited Rancho El Manzanillo for lunch and a chance to observe giant tortoises roaming freely through muddy fields.  We even had to wear rubber boots because of the mud and the tortoise poop!

Unfortunately, later that afternoon, my journey took an unexpected turn.
While taking photos near the Santa Cruz sign, I wasn’t paying attention to where I was walking.  I missed a step, twisted my ankle badly, and immediately heard a cracking sound.
Thankfully, two fellow travel advisors rushed to help me while the expedition crew, guides, and onboard doctor arrived within minutes.

Since I couldn’t walk, they transported me back to the ship on a stretcher via zodiac.  Even in pain, I somehow managed to laugh and take photos with the crew and the doctor during the rescue.

The onboard medical team immediately began treatment with pain medication locally and injections, anti-inflammatory capsules, compression wrapping, and a walking boot.  The swelling was intense at first, but thankfully, it improved significantly by the next morning.
What impressed me most throughout this entire experience was the professionalism and care provided by HX Expeditions and the crew aboard the Santa Cruz II.

Doctor Marcelo Izquierdo checked on me multiple times throughout the day, meals were delivered directly to my cabin, and both the crew and my fellow travel advisors constantly made sure I was okay.
This experience reminded me how important it is to:

• Always watch your step while traveling
• Wear proper footwear during expedition activities
• Purchase travel insurance for medical emergencies, not just flight delays or lost luggage
• Travel with companies that prioritize safety and onboard medical support

One of the biggest advantages of traveling with HX Expeditions is having a permanent doctor onboard, trained expedition staff, emergency protocols, and support systems already in place.

Even the expedition guides are trained in emergency response procedures and communication protocols in remote environments.

Final Thoughts So Far
Another detail worth mentioning is how seamless the overall logistics have been throughout this experience.

HX Expeditions works closely with Metropolitan Touring in Ecuador, which coordinated airport transfers, hotels, flights to and from the Galápagos, and all land-based touring.
Even though I didn’t receive every tiny detail of the itinerary beforehand, I actually appreciated discovering parts of the journey organically as we traveled.  Expedition cruising is immersive by nature, and attending the daily expedition briefings onboard is part of the experience.

This journey has already reinforced why expedition travel is unlike any other form of travel.
It’s not just about seeing beautiful places; it’s about learning, adapting, exploring responsibly, connecting with nature, and sometimes even overcoming unexpected challenges along the way.

And despite my injury, I can honestly say this has been one of the most unforgettable travel experiences of my life.
